Our ELA instruction for grades 6-8 follows the shifts for the Common Core Standards towards:

  • Balancing Informational and Literary Text
  • Building Knowledge in the Disciplines
  • Staircase of Complexity
  • Text-Based Answers
  • Writing from Sources
  • Academic Vocabulary

Major topics for grades 6-8 ELA include students reading a true balance of informational and literary texts. Students will build knowledge about the world through thetext they are reading.

Students in grades 6-8 ELA will read a central, grade appropriate text around which instruction is centered. Thus, creating a more patient work environment allowing more time, space, and support in the curriculum for close reading.

Students engage in rich and rigorous evidence based conversations about text, and student writing emphasizes the use of evidence from sources to inform or make an argument. Students will constantly build the transferable vocabulary they need to access grade level complex texts. This will be accomplished effectively by spiraling like content in increasingly complex texts.

Grade 8

The primary focus is on the New Testament wherein the students will concentrate on the life, death, Resurrection, and Ascension of Jesus and how these sacred events continue today in the life of the church.

In addition, they will explore the culture, history, and people of the time of Jesus. The students will identify and explore the four Gospels and recognize the distinct types of writings found in the New Testament.
