OLBS offers a Response to Intervention (RTI) model for grades K-8 to help students succeed in the area of reading. Students are selected to participate in RTI based on testing results, class work and teacher input. Children in the RTI program work with the reading teacher in small groups to support and encourage their literacy skills. This support coincides with what they are learning in their ELA classroom. Reading growth is encouraged using games, computer programs and specific strategies. Students in the program are monitored frequently to ensure that they are progressing as expected.
In the early grades we focus on letter recognition and phonics. As the students grow in their reading ability we begin to work on building comprehension, vocabulary development and fluency.
In the upper grades comprehension and fluency are our main focus. We learn about what good readers do before, during and after reading. Skills such as predicting, rereading and reviewing are emphasized and we work on expanding our vocabulary.
