General Expectations:

Math:

This year there will be a large emphasis on multiplication. Students will be expected to know their multiplication facts as well as develop an understanding for the various strategies involved in multiplication and division. Students will also see Fraction, Measurement, Perimeter and Area, as well as Geometry. In April, students will be taking the New York State Math Assessment.

Reading:

This year students will be expected to read to learn. They have spent the past 3 years learning how to read and now they will be able to read many different texts to help prepare them for the future. They have a large selection of books to choose from in class to read during the day. They will be taught explicitly how to use comprehension strategies to become better readers using the mentor text Journey’s as well as authentic literature. This will be done in both whole group and small group differentiated instruction time. The students will enjoy small group book clubs with their peers using authentic literature and incorporating comprehension and fluency practice.

English Language Arts:

Students will be prepared to take the New York State ELA test in April. We work on developing their vocabulary, phonic and grammar skills to become better readers and writers. This are all incorporated throughout the school day in the various subjects.

Writing:

  • Personal narratives
  • Compare and contrast essays
  • Persuasive essays
  • Research report
  • Poetry
  • Friendly letters

Religion:

Students will build on the foundational skills learned in the previous years. We will discuss more in depth what happens in church during the mass. We will spend a large portion of the year getting ready for their First Eucharist. In addition, religion is incorporated into many aspects of the school day. Students will learn “What Catholics Believe”, “How Catholics Worship”, How Catholics Live” and “How Catholics Pray”.

Science:

Students will perform many experiments in class. We study a variety of topics including:

  • Weather
  • Land
  • Plant life
  • Matter and Energy
  • Solar System

Science- 4th Grade:

Students will meet with me for one period a day. They will have more reading at home work in order to cover important topics. There will be a greater emphasis on independent note taking in class.
