Math

Our mathematics instruction for grades 5 to 8 follows the shifts in the Common Core Standards towards focus, coherence, understanding, and application.

The major topics in fifth grade math include Numbers and Operations in Base Ten and with Fractions as well as Measurement and Data. Additional topics include Geometry and Operations and Algebraic Thinking.

In sixth grade, the curriculum focuses on Ratios and Proportional Relationships, the Number System, and Equations and Expressions. Additional topics include Geometry and Statistics.

Seventh grade curriculum similarly focuses on the same topics as sixth grade, but goes into greater detail and application. The topics remain to be Ratios and Proportional Relationships, the Number System, and Equations and Expressions. Additional topics include Statistics and Probability and Geometry. An accelerated track is also available for seventh graders to prepare them to take Regents Algebra in eighth grade. These students will learn some topics from the eighth grade curriculum in addition to their seventh grade coursework.

The major topics in eighth grade include Expressions and Equations, Functions, and Geometry. Additional topics include Statistics and Probability.

Regents Algebra is also offered for eighth graders. This is an accelerated course. These students take the New York State Regents Exam in June and are eligible for high school credit.
